This event in Steiermark Office Brussels will be hosted by the AER (Assembly of European Regions) and the “Land Steiermark”, who has recently won the AER “Communicating Europe Award 2009”. For the first time, in the course of the “AER Communications Atelier”, you will have the opportunity to take part in our discussion from your office PC, following the discussion via “live-stream” and participating in our chat at http://europa.steiermark.at/stream

According to the Lisbon Treaty, European citizens can actively participate in the legislative process of the European Union. To submit a European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI), European citizens have to gather 1,000.000 supporting signatures of their fellow Europeans. The benefit for this effort is the opportunity to request the European Commission to initiate a new legal proposal.

In practice, there are still many questions considering the implementation of this democratic initiative. To answer some of them is one of the main aims of our event in Brussels, which will be hosted by Richard MEDIC, European Media and Communications Expert (former AER Spokesman). The main speakers are Sebastian KURPAS, a representative from the European Commission and Johannes W. PICHLER, Professor for European Law at the University of Graz and Director of the Austrian Institute for European Law and Politics in Salzburg (AT).
