Org. Setting and Reporting:

This position is located in the Peacekeeping Best Practices Section of the Policy, Evaluation and Training Division, Department of Peacekeeping Operations and the incumbent will report to one of the Team Leaders within the Section.


Responsibilities:

- Assist in the drafting, revision and development of guidance, lessons learned and best practice material in support of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) and the Department of Field Support (DFS)
- Liaise with UN Secretariat, UN system and external on guidance and knowledge management issues;
- Provide synthesis of lessons and best practices into useable trend analyzis to inform decision-making and contribute to development of doctrinal and guidance materials for peacekeeping;
- Assist in the promotion of knowledge sharing culture in DPKO-DFS and ensure transfer of guidance and replicable lessons using variety of communication mediums;
- Support development of new doctrine, strategy,cross cutting policy papers and guidance in specialist areas on priority issues in UN peacekeeping
- Liaise with units and working groups in DPKO and DFS to support the development of guidance, lessons learned or policy with specialist areas
- Researches and analyzes mission materials, best practices and guidance materials to capture the experiences, lessons and practices emanating from field missions and headquarters;
- Produce briefings, speeches and presentations on the DPKO/DFS guidance and best practices approaches and on lessons learned and cross-cutting policy issues
- Undertake research based on existing mission materials, guidance, best practices materials for peacekeeping and external publications on issues affecting UN peacekeeping
- Support Peaekeeping Operations with the provision of guidance, lesson learned and best practices material as requested
- Perform other duties as required

Education:

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in business administration, management, economics, political science, social science, international reltaions or a related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.


Work Experience:

A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in research, policy development, political affairs or international affairs, public administration, project or programme management, administration, organizational development, operations management or a related area. Experience working for an international organization is desirable. Experience in a peacekeeping mission is desirable.


Languages:

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of French is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
