Org. Setting and Reporting

The mandate of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is to promote regional cooperation for inclusive economic and social development in the Asian and Pacific region. ESCAP’s role as a regional development arm of the United Nations Secretariat is to support its membership, through its analytical, normative and technical cooperation, to respond to the development priorities and changing needs of the Asian and Pacific region.

This position is located in the Office of the Executive Secretary. The incumbent reports directly to the Executive Secretary.


Responsibilities

• Supports the implementation of the programme of the Office of the Executive Secretary (OES).

• Assists the ES in the consideration of all matters requiring her personal attention, including reviewing all correspondence for the attention of the ES and identification of relevant background information to facilitate the ES’ consideration and decision making.

• Assists the ES in connection with his/her attendance at meetings including the Senior Management Group, the Executive Committee of Economic and Social Affairs (EC-ESA) Principals and other Senior UN Officials, and meetings of ES’ of the Regional Commissions, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), and global conferences.

• Undertakes the timely preparation of briefing materials for the ES for his/her attendance at meetings and for his/her discussions with visiting dignitaries and for his/her missions.

• With the support of the ES’ Personal Assistant, organises the ES’ official travel to member States and to attend meetings and accords particular attention to the strategic positioning of the Executive Secretary and the Organization on those occasions.

• Provides logistical and protocol support to the ES during missions, as necessary.

• Supports the Secretary of the Commission in substantive review of documentation and preparation for Commission sessions.

• Provides substantive support to the Secretary of the Commission in preparing for, participating in, and assessing effectiveness of meetings of other intergovernmental bodies.

• Serves as the OES focal point for programme planning and reporting for the Executive Direction and Management (EDM).

• Undertakes activities of an ad hoc nature as requested by the ES.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in business or public administration, finance, accounting, law or related area. A first level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
