Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system’s designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP's Division of Communications and Public Information (DCPI) communicates UNEP's core messages to all stakeholders and partners, raising environmental awareness, influencing attitudes, behavior and decisions related to the local and global environment, and enhancing the profile of UNEP worldwide. This post is located in UNEP/DCPI at the Nairobi duty station. Under the supervision of the Director, the incumbent will perform the following functions:


Responsibilities

1. Contribute to the formulation of overall policies, procedures, objectives and guidelines of UNEP publishing activities; Develop an annual publishing programme in line with the UNEP Programme Of Work; Promote UNEP publications through the UNEP website and other avenues such as meetings, book fairs and external partners; Work closely with divisions and ensure that UNEP migrates to Electronic Publishing to increase readership and visibility; Ensure that all titles are uploaded onto the UNEP publication database; Coordinate and supervise the work of a team of graphic designers and production staf; Supervise and provide guidance to staff of the Online Access to Research in the Environment programme (OARE) and a Science Writer; Coordinate and promote the sale of UNEP publications through distributors and sales agents and ensure printed copies of publications are distributed in a timely and efficient fashion; Compile and produce UNEP's annual publications catalogue Environment in print; Promote a culture of translation in UNEP of publications into other UN languages; In collaboration with writers/editors, coordinate and plan thematic issues of UNEP's quarterly flagship magazine, Our Planet and coordinate the production of the UNEP's annual report; Edit complex and sensitive material and control the quality of UNEP publications;

2. Act as the secretary of the UNEP Publishing Board. 3. Be responsible for the day-to-day administrative and personnel issues in the Publishing Unit. 4. Perform any other duties assigned.


Competencies

Professionalism: Knowledge of publishing practices and procedures and proven competence in writing, editing and production in the print media and related areas. Strong research and analytical skills and up-to-date knowledge of current affairs and environmental issues. Ability to monitor and appraise production and publishing work against milestones. Shows persistence when faced with difficult problems or challenges and remains calm in stressful situations.

Communication: Ability to research, write and speak clearly and effectively in the English language. Strong conceptual skills combined with a proven ability to write normative documents addressing a variety of audiences.

Planning and organization: Develops clear goals that are consistent with agreed strategies. Foresees risks and allows for contingencies when planning. Monitors and adjusts plans and actions as necessary and allocates appropriate amount of time and resources for completing work.

Judgement/Decision Making: Ability to identify key issues in complex situations, gathers relevant information before making a decision and determines the actions proposed will satisfy the expressed underlying needs. Provides motivation and assumes leadership, networking and team-player roles vis-à-vis the colleagues, UN partners and other stakeholders.


Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communications, publishing, international relations or related area. A first level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.


Work Experience

A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in editing and/or publishing or related field.


Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Working knowledge of French is desirable; knowledge of another UN language is desirable.
