OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

Purpose of the Post:
To provide technical support to the Southern Region Polio Eradication Programme in the various fields of developing, implementing and evaluating the various strategies of polio eradication and routine immunization.


Objectives of the Programme:
Eradication of polio from Afghanistan and certification of its eradication.


Organizational Context:
Under the guidance of the Southern Region Medical Officer Poliomyelitis Eradication Initiative and the WHO country Team Leader, Polio Eradication and the overall supervision of WHO Representative, the incumbent will work as Regional Technical Officer, within the framework of national policies and guidelines defined in WHO programme and policy documents.


Description of duties

The incumbent will be responsible to:
1. Assist in planning, implementation and monitoring of Supplemental immunization activities (Supplementary Immunization Activities) in the field.
2. Travel frequently to different provinces and districts of the Southern regions to supervise Supplementary Immunization Activities and oversee the process of different types of data collection and timely analysis for its use and preparing regional Supplementary Immunization Activities reports.
3. Take all necessary measures to ensure achievement / maintenance of certification standards for Acute Flaccid Paralysis surveillance system and supervise implementation of active surveillance and routine reporting.
4. Undertake regular performance reviews including weekly analysis of Acute Flaccid Paralysis surveillance data, in order to identify and overcome technical and performance bottle necks and build the analytical capacity of field staff through technical assistance.
5. Update guidelines, training modules and other materials to assist in development of monitoring and evaluation tools.
6. Facilitate trainings and other capacity building activities for national and field staff.
7. Undertake advocacy activities with senior provincial / district officials to ensure their full support and commitment.
8. Participate in organizing advocacy/orientation meetings for health care providers and liaise with different Expanded Programme of lmmunization/Poliomyelitis Eradication Initiative partners to seek their support.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

Essential: University degree in Medicine.
Desirable: Post Graduate degree in Public Health.

Competency in Word, Excel, Power point and familiarity with EPI INFO.


Experience

Essential: At least two years experience in Primary Health Care and Expanded Programme of Immunization / Polio Eradication.

Desirable: Working experience with NGOs / UN agencies / Ministry of Public Health (MoPH).

Languages: Excellent knowledge of English and local language.
