This position is located in the Protocol and Liaison Service, DGACM and the incumbent reports to the Chief of Protocol.


Responsibilities

Under the general supervision of the Chief of Protocol the Protocol Officer will be responsible for performing the following duties:


1. Maintains contacts with permanent missions and offices of Member States and organizations assigned to him/her.
2. Provides necessary protoccol and liaison services to these missions and delegations to settle various matters (administrative, legal, protocol).
3. Advises permanent missions and delegations on matters of protocol, order of precedence, privileges and immunities and relations with host country authorities.
4. Is responsible for the registration and termination of the staff members and diplomats of permanent missions and delegations assigned to him/her, as well as the handling of requests for diplomatic privileges and immunities.
5. Provides protocol service and advice to staff of the United Nations Secretariat.

Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in Administration , Political Science, International Relations or related areas. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.


Work Experience

A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in protocol or related field. Work experience with an International Organization in the area of protocol is desirable


Languages

Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage

Assessment Method

Eligible candidates may be requested to undergo written knowledge-based assessment exercises, which may be followed by a competency-based interview depending on the result of the test

Staff members are subject to the authority of the Secretary-General and to assignment by him or her. In this context, all staff are expected to move periodically to new functions in their careers In accordance with established rules and procedures.
