The position is located in the Security Council Practices and Charter Research Branch of the Department of the Department of Political Affairs (DPA). The incumbent will report to the Chief of the Security Council Practices and Charter Research Branch.


Responsibilities

The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties:
- To conduct extensive research and analysis for the Repertoire of the Practice of the Security Council;
- To draft, edit and revise studies for the Repertoire of the Practice of the Security Council;
- To prepare responses to queries on procedural and constitutional issues related to the Security Council from Member States or Secretariat officials;
- To follow, as assigned, the proceedings of the Security Council and prepare analytical notes on noteworthy procedural and constitutional developments;
- To monitor questions on the agendas of the Security Council and the General Assembly relating to the maintenance of international peace and security;
- To provide, as assigned, advice on the working methods as well as the current and past practices of the Security Council;
- To contribute to the development and update of the Branch’s computerized databases on Lotus Notes;
- To supervise a team of Junior Professional Officers and General Service staff, and provide instructions and training as necessary;
- To perform other related duties, as assigned.


Competencies

• Professionalism: Demonstrated expertise in the area of political affairs; proven conceptual and analytical skills; understanding of and ability to evaluate international political situations; good knowledge of the current practices and procedures of the Security Council, including its working methods. Proven supervisory skills in overseeing work of junior professional officers and General Service staff in report writing and research work. Demonstrates familiarity with Lotus Notes databases. Takes responsibility for incorporating gender perspectives and ensuring the equal participation of women and men in all areas of work.

• Teamwork: Works collaboratively with colleagues to achieve organizational goals. Solicits input by genuinely valuing others' ideas and expertise; is willing to learn from others. Places team agenda before personal agenda. Supports and acts in accordance with final group decision, even when such decisions may not entirely reflect own position. Education

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international law or related area. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.


Work Experience

A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area. Experience in working with and knowledge of the United Nations Security Council practices and procedures is required. Familiarity with Lotus Notes databases is required.


Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is an advantage.

Assessment Method

A written substantive assessment test and/or competency-based interview will be conducted.
