Language skills are strategic requisites for education and jobs. The European Union promotes language learning at all levels in order to equip its citizens with the language skills to make full use of the opportunities created by an integrated Europe. The EU’s language policy promotes multilingualism and aims for a situation in which every EU citizens can speak at least two foreign languages, in addition to their mother tongue.
European entrepreneurs and lawyers should have certain language capabilities in order to be successful in their professional activities. The challenge for profitable international activities is to integrate and understand different organisational cultures and communicate effectively.
As a result, the use of a second working language in the European professional environment and the correct understanding of the proper linguistic forms in different fields and situations are key elements to properly and successfully work with, or within the European Union.
Although EU regulations and other legislative documents are published in the 23 official languages, actually few working documents are translated into all languages. The European Institutions generally employ English, French and German as working languages.
Considering that English is one of the "second languages" most often used for education and professional activities, this course will provide an effective practical preparation in written English and oral communication, both as regards the functioning of the EU decision-making process and the work carried out in the European legal context.
Structure, Methodology and Programme:
The course will focus on the aspects of the English language peculiar to the European Union and on how to identify the proper English terminology in different professional fields and situations. While dealing with and analysing these matters, participants will expand their knowledge and abilities in using and managing legal instruments such as: understanding and drafting preparatory documents, planning talks and presentations for meetings and drafting reports.
In order to provide participants with the needed theoretical and practical tools, the sessions will include classes, workshops, simulations and working groups.
Presentations, exercises, case-studies and documentation will be delivered in English.
The course is structured into two parts:
• The first part will introduce the importance of a correct understanding and the use of the proper English language into the European legal environment. Suggestions on useful tools and techniques for the choice of correct terminology (including terminology databases and computer assisted translation) will be given to participants, considering that a term may have different legal meanings in the English national tradition and in the EU context (and also when compared to other commonly used forms of English).
Practical activities, role-play, and exercises will complete the training.
• The second part is mainly devoted to “plain English” in EU legal context, false friends and legal traps, with a specific focus on drafting EU documents and institutional oral communication (talks, presentations, meetings and interviews). Case-studies, workshops and simulations will be organised with the aim of developing participants’ self-confidence and abilities.
Teaching staff:
Teachers involved in this training project are highly qualified professionals, able to match training needs specific to every capacity and methodology taught in the course.
Among them: native English speakers and linguists; EU legal experts in recent legal developments; EU officials and experts on the most-debated recent EU policies; linguistic assistants with a strong experience in the preparation of case studies, report drafting etc.
Candidates:
The course is mainly devoted to:
• graduates and professionals who need to use legal English terminology in their work with or within the EU Institutions and Agencies;
• lawyers, legal researchers, trainee lawyers and lawyer linguists wishing to approach a EU career;
• graduates and professionals who have passed a EU competition selection phase and wishing to increase their communication skills in order to better manage their future assignments;
• lawyers, legal consultants and professionals working in international enterprises and law firms who need to communicate and translate more effectively in their professional contexts.
Enrolment procedures:
Applications will be accepted on a "first-come first-served" basis, until the planned maximum number of participants has been reached.
