Youth delegates and Directors General on Youth of the EU Member States discussed about youth participation in democratic life and the transition to employment. They drafted a set of recommendations which highlight the importance of youth participation in democratic life, call for Member States to start initiatives to stimulate discussion on lowering the voting age to 16, as well as easing the voting process through education and simplification of voting procedures, ask for an independent programme for youth with its own budget line and stress the importance of close involvement of youth organisations and young people in decision-making. Member States were also called on to support youth organisations and to form strategic partnerships with them. Non-formal education provided by these youth organisations is considered necessary for developing skills and competencies of young people.
The recommendations will be integrated into the preparation of the Council Conclusions in May 2012.
