Lavoro: Checklist - working in Netherlands
The preparation phase
Formalities:
Update your passport ID-card: make sure it is valid for at least one year after arrival in the Netherlands, and for the full duration of your planned stay if possible;
Update your driver's license: make sure it has at least one year before its expiry date. If it has no expiry date make sure your driver's license is not older than 9 years;
Legalisation: get your birth and marriage certificates legalised or apostilled (www.expatguideholland.com/themes/formalities/legalisation_of_documents/). Documents may also need to be translated if not already in English, French, German or Dutch. Different rules apply to different nationalities, so check with your HR manager or the website www.hcch.net for information pertaining to your personal situation.
Financial arrangements:
• Arrange with your bank how accounts are to be handled during the assignment;
• Cancel standing orders as necessary;
• Inform your income tax office of the move and complete any necessary forms.
Children:
• Collect examples of your child's current schoolwork and reports, test results, etc. (in English if possible);
• Check if there is a waiting list for your children at the (international) school and apply for a place. Also do this for childcare organisations if needed;
• Speak to a tax consultant regarding tax exemptions and the implications of school fees;
• Take photos of family, friends and familiar places;
• Check that children have the addresses of friends with whom they want to stay in touch;
• Ensure that favourite toys, personal items, special food, books and games are put aside to go with the hand luggage.
Healthcare:
• Request medical records - make sure you get your children's full vaccination records;
• Make sure you bring enough medicine to cover the first few weeks, in case you use medicine.
Social security:
• If applicable, get an E101 form (www.svb.nl/int/en/id/werkgevers/e101_formulier/e101_aanvragen/) if you wish to pay social security in your home country;
• Check your health insurance - make sure you are covered at all times;
• Check with your employer for possible collective insurance.
Housing:
• Start looking at housing websites to get a feel for prices, sizes, and locations;
• Check with your HR manager for possible housing assistance;
• Have measurements of ‘must take' furniture to see if it will fit in the new home;
• Check several removal companies for quotes for your international removal;
• Decide what to do with your house in your home country - rent it out or sell it -and take action.
Pets:
• Check that animals have appropriate identification (chip or tattoo) and documentation;
• Get vaccinations up-to-date (check expire date on the vaccinations);
• Check if you have to make a flight reservation for your pet.
Vehicles:
• Consider whether to bring your car with you;
• Dutch purchase taxes are high, and vehicles for personal use may be imported tax free under certain conditions (the most important is that you have had and used the car for more than six months);
• It may be difficult to get vehicles over 10 years old through environmental testing;
• Get a no-claims statement from your current insurance company;
• Arrange flights to the Netherlands.
The arrival phase
Formalities:
• Apply for and collect your work permit (if applicable);
• Register at the Town Hall where you will be living;
• Apply for your residence permit (if applicable). In some cases this application can be done before the work permit has been issued;
• Collect your citizen service number (BSN) at the local Town Hall;
• Receive confirmation that your residence permit will be issued (if applicable);
• Collect your residence permit from the Town Hall (if applicable);
• Open a bank account (bring your BSN number!).
Transport:
• Register imported vehicles with the Dutch authorities. People registered as living in the Netherlands may not own and drive a ‘foreign' vehicle here.
Children:
• Children between the ages of 5 and 16 are obligated to attend full-time education.
Healthcare:
• Register with a local doctor and dentist.
