INTERSOS is an independent non-profit humanitarian organization committed to assist the victims of natural disasters and armed conflicts. Its activities are based on the principles of solidarity, justice, human dignity, equality of rights and opportunities, and respect for diversity and coexistence, paying special attention to the most vulnerable and unprotected people.

INTERSOS has been present in Afghanistan since October 2001, with its main office in Kabul and Sub Offices in Jalalabad, Maimana, Kandahar, Heart and Lashkar Gah.

INTERSOS has worked on various aspects of the Afghan emergency, with a main focus on repatriation and returns, water and sanitation, reconstruction, humanitarian demining, mine risk education, and institutional building.

The situation in Afghanistan is marked by political uncertainty, increased military activity and general insecurity which have heightened children’s vulnerability to conflict related violence including in areas previously considered as relatively safe. Unaccompanied and separated children represent, together with the street children, some the most vulnerable groups in Afghanistan, in terms of the potential risks and the weakness of social and legal protection networks.

INTERSOS will base its action on the experience and lesson learnt gathered during the past years of intervention in favor of the most vulnerable categories of children in the country, facilitating the establishment of a more comprehensive inter-provincial protection system for the unaccompanied minors through the strengthening of the already established protection networks in the Western Region and in Faryab Province.
