Microsoft looking for: Machine Learning & Big Data Researcher.

Skype and Lync are for doing things together, whenever you’re apart.
We make it simple to share experiences – big or small - with the people that matter to you, wherever they are.
Our technology lets people work with colleagues, hold a meeting, share stories, celebrate birthdays, learn a language – just about anything you need to do together every day.
It’s all made possible by the people who work here. And you could be one of them.

Machine Learning & Big Data Researcher – Skype Labs, London

Skype Labs is a research team dedicated to making Skype products better. Skype Labs' focus is towards applied research in real-time communication and data analytics. Specifically, the team works on signal processing algorithms for audio, video and network, and data mining research on Skype's network and user data.
While the research has a long-term vision aligned with the company strategy, we split our work into short-term deliverables. In addition to working closely with development teams, we collaborate with Microsoft Research and support, guide and follow a number of university projects.
Skype has over 300M connected users each month, making us one of the largest services on the Internet. We have, over the years, built up vast databases that capture information about call quality, call reliability, social graph connectivity, product usage, payments, and profile, just to name a few. This makes our data set one of the most exciting resources for data mining and machine learning in the world. Our work in data analytics explores innovative machine learning and data mining methods to efficiently mine Skype's data, improve the call quality and call reliability, generate insights on product usage, and understand the properties of our social graph.

What you will do:
• propose innovative solutions in the areas of machine learning, data mining and statistics for relevant problems, including social and technical network analysis and understanding of user behavior.
• prototype, and implement the proposed solutions; ensure scalability and efficiency large scale data analyses and model development.
• work closely with the team members and other teams to optimize and ship the proposed solutions (if applicable) or to generate actionable insights for improving Skype products.
• document the proposed solutions, implementations and experimental details in technical reports, journal and conference articles.
• disseminate the research results through compelling presentations and demos.

Who we are looking for:
• a graduate with a PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science related discipline (with focus on machine learning, data mining or similar academic areas).
• someone with a proven track record of using data mining and machine learning techniques to solve real-world problems, with strong experience of research modelling such as RandomForests, K-Series, Bayesian Modelling etc…
• a rapid prototyping guru with the ability to act fast and deliver quality software, knowing either C++, C# or Java OOP.
• a world class research track record (patents, publications, presentations) and/or equivalent track record of shipping products.
• an engineer with a strong knowledge of distributed programming, with visualization a big plus.

And naturally, we offer all the benefits you’d expect from Microsoft.

Microsoft is an equal opportunity employer and supports workforce diversity.
