EIUC Training Seminar on International Human Rights Diplomacy

EIUC is now ready to accept applications for the training seminar on International Human Rights Diplomacy that will be held from 23 to 25 April 2015 at the historical Monastery of San Nicolò, Lido, a beautiful location in the heart of the Venetian lagoon.

Objectives
The International Human Rights Diplomacy training seminar will analyse the notion, tools and challenges of international cooperation and multilateral diplomacy, taking current themes and priorities as examples.

Emphasis is also placed on practical exercises such as negotiating plays; on developing examples for drafting and negotiating resolutions, decisions and common positions; and on capacity building tools for public diplomacy.

The program is to enhance international cooperation and multilateral diplomacy, with a focus on human rights, rule of law, and democracy issues.

Lecturers
Ambassador Christian Strohal
serves as Permanent Representative of Austria to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), and represented his country to the United Nations Office in Geneva from 2008 till 2013. The Austrian diplomat was the Director of the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (ODIHR) of OSCE from 2003

Thomas Unger is currently working as a researcher on transitional justice and as an adviser to the UN Special Rapporteur on Truth, Justice, Reparation and Guarantees of Non-Recurrence.

Thomas Unger has worked before as a legal adviser to the Austrian Foreign Ministry on human rights and international humanitarian law.He has been working as a legal system monitor with the OSCE Mission in Kosovo, as well as a legal clerk with the Office of the Prosecutor of the ICTY.


Theoretical considerations will be combined with first-hand experiences by members of the COHOM (the Council’s working group on the human rights aspects of EU external relations) and by officials of international governmental and non-governmental organisations.

Targeted Audience
The seminar, held in English, is principally targeted on young diplomats who wish to deepen topics related to human rights, rule of law and democratic governance. The course is moreover addressed to those who are already involved in human rights related activities in their respective administrations or prepare for such functions and have substantial knowledge of human rights or people who want to explore the area of diplomacy.
