• ERC opens 2016 programme with Starting Grants
Brussels: More details have been announced on the European Research Council’s Work Programme for 2016.
• Scientists use 1,000 years of climate data to predict weather
UK: Research by scientists into climatic patterns from the past 1,000 years at the UK’s University of Reading has improved understanding of how the weather in Europe could respond to changes in the future.
• EU customs procedures modernised
Brussels: The European Commission has adopted a legal act to create a simpler, integrated EU customs system to support cross-border trade and provide for more EU-wide co-operation in customs matters.
• UEG: Public at risk due to HCV detection practices
Europe: The vice-president of the United European Gastroenterology has called for improvements in national strategies for hepatitis C virus (HCV) screening and treatment.
• 2016 ERC work programme published
Brussels: Next year’s work programme for the European Research Council has been published, with the body having a budget of over €1.6bn in 2016.
• Lobster-Eye imager finds soft X-ray emissions
United States: A group of researchers led by NASA have set out to create a wide-field-of-view soft X-ray imager that is capable of detecting the soft X-ray emissions produced whenever the solar wind encounters neutral gas.
• Migrant killed as 1,500 attempt to cross Channel
UK/France: A migrant has been crushed to death by a HGV in France near the Channel Tunnel.
• Probe finds haze and flowing ice on Pluto
United States: Flowing ice and a surprising extended haze are among the newest discoveries from NASA’s New Horizons mission.
• Sentinel-2A reveals first images
Global: The first images obtained from the Sentinel-2A satellite are showing how the environment of the Earth can be protected
• Cypriot cheese to get protected origin status
Brussels: A Cypriot cheese is set to receive Protected Designation of Origin status after the European Commission published the application to register the names Halloumi/‘Hellim’ in Greek and Turkish.
