Commissioner Malmström in Ukraine

On 13 November Trade Commissionner Cecilia Malmstrom met with representatives of the Ukranian government in Kiev. Discussions focussed on the implementation as of 1 January 2016 of the agreement on a Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA) between the EU and Ukraine. During her visit she met President Petro Poroshenko, Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk, Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin and Minister for Economy and Trade Aivaras Abromavicius. Reforms related to the implementation of the DCFTA were also discussed. More information.


• INVESTMENT
EU finalises proposal for investment protection and Court System for TTIP

The EU has formally presented to the US its proposal for a reformed approach on investment protection and a new and more transparent system for resolving disputes between investors and states: the Investment Court System. The new system would replace the existing investor-to-state dispute settlement (ISDS) mechanism in TTIP and in all ongoing and future EU trade and investment negotiations. More information.


• THE EU AND THE WTO
Cheaper medicines for the least developed countries – Commission welcomes the WTO decision

The World Trade Organization (WTO) has agreed to grant a waiver to least developed countries (LDCs) in relation to its rules on patents for pharmaceuticals. The move will facilitate their access to cheaper medicines for the next 17 years. More information.
