Call for Trainers: Feasibility Study: Recognition of Intercultural Competence and non-formal learning in Higher Education

SALTO Cultural Diversity is looking for 1 researcher

Application deadline: Friday 24 June 2016 at 12:00 GMT

Description

Aim:
the overall aim of this research is to support the strengthening of the role of intercultural competence in training for youth workers and others involved in supporting young people’s non-formal learning.

Objectives:
• To carry out an analysis of how intercultural competence (ICC) is currently integrated into the initial and post-experience training offered to youth and community workers by Further and Higher Education institutions. The analysis should cover: curriculum, assessment and recognition at three or four education providers in Poland and the UK.
• To explore possible links between ICC practice and the ICC component (Competence area 6) of the European Training Strategy (ETS).
• To assess the potential to offer accredited learning in ICC in the adult and vocational education sectors and to assess the suitability of the ICC component of the ETS to meet specific needs of institutions and accrediting bodies in these sectors.
• To identify the potential options for the ICC to be recognised in Polish and UK national qualification frameworks and awarding bodies and to analyse the suitability of the current ICC framework to national standards and requirements.
• To present various options for the accreditation of ICC, as above, and to recommend the option(s) which will directly support the introduction of ICC by specific training providers and national accrediting bodies.
This should include a task analysis, stakeholder analysis (identifying potential partners in Poland and the UK), financial and other resources required, timelines and milestones, and recommendations for any pilot phase.

Background

This research contributes to the long-term objective of SALTO Cultural Diversity (SALTO CD) of supporting youth workers and youth leaders to develop their intercultural competence.

It continues the process began by SALTO Cultural Diversity in May 2009, at the first Intercultural Competence round table in Rome. Findings from the round table helped guide SALTO Cultural Diversity’s exploration of fundamental concepts in intercultural competence and this led to the establishment of a project originally entitled ‘Miedzy Innymi’ (‘Among Others’) initiated in Poland in 2010 by a team of trainers of the Youth in Action Programme (YiA) and the German-Polish Youth Office (PNWM/DPJW). The main aim of the project was to build on the findings of the SALTO ICC Round Table and to combine the development of intercultural competences with cross-sectoral co-operation with Higher Education Institutions and the promotion of non-formal education in youth worker training.

Through this current research, SALTO Cultural Diversity aims to mainstream the idea of ICC and improve its application in youth work and non-formal learning for young people.
