IJGD 16239 RAISED-BED GARDENING FOR REFUGEES IN HAMBURG from 15/08/2016 to 31/08/2016, CONS

Thousands of people have been fleeing to Europe in the past few months. 132 of these people (mostly families) have found a new home in the Wilhelmsburg district of Hamburg, in accommodation for recognised refugees and asylum seekers. This accommodation consists of 5 modular homes on a newly built plot with hard, gravelly soil. The aim of your workcamp will be to make the outside area of this accommodation look more appealing and, through working with the local residents to build 5 raised-bed gardens, to merge the practical with the beautiful. The residents will have the opportunity to grow fruit, vegetables and other plants (both from their homeland as well as from Germany) inside the raised-bed gardens, in order to be able to start to live off of their own produce. After working on the raised-bed gardens, you can get to know each other (and the residents) through a variety of language, dance and sport activities in your accommodation. The crowning jewel of the project will be a large art and cultures festival on the 30th August in the residential accommodation.
You will be living and working in the Wilhelmsburg district of Hamburg. From there you can explore the second largest city in Germany with its many tourist attractions without any problems. On weekends it’s worth taking a trip to the Nordsee and Ostsee lakes.
