VIDEO - Europe: our past is our future

To celebrate this year's Europe Day, Domenico Lenarduzzi, the father of the Erasmus programme, discusses Europe, a story of peace and democracy, prosperity and opportunity, with his grandson, Raffaele Vaccaro.

Domenico had the idea of the Erasmus study programme 30 years ago. Since 1987, Erasmus has given 9 million people the chance to study, train, volunteer or gain professional experience abroad. At this critical moment in history, it is worthwhile remembering the principles that unite us, as Europeans, and our vision for our common future.

Europe Day held on 9 May every year celebrates peace and unity in Europe. The date marks the anniversary of the historical 'Schuman declaration'. At a speech in Paris in 1950, Robert Schuman, the then French foreign minister, set out his idea for a new form of political cooperation in Europe, which would make war between Europe’s nations unthinkable.
