Activities
The Auslandsinstitut (Foreign Institute) works under the aegis of the Auslandsgesellschaft. As such, it is the nucleus from which the society grew into its modern-day form. The Institute communicates a wealth of information about "foreign" cultures as well as developing and maintaining contacts in numerous other countries.
The main element supporting this work are the thirty bilateral country circles each run by honorary officials. Thanks to their workshops, talks, forums, concerts and exhibitions, they facilitate encounters and convey knowledge about life in other countries in Europe and throughout the world. Native Dortmundians and members of the ethnic communities are actively committed here. The Institute beleives that each and every new volunteer from a European country represents a further opening-up and enrichment of our transnational work. Input from these volunteers in the form of their ex-perience in the "homeland" or as suggestions for the future are not only welcome but also integrated into our work.
District and region
Located on the periphery of the Ruhr, at the heart of Westphalia, Dortmund (and its 600,000 inhabitants) offers a wide variety of economic and cultural life. Over the last ten years, this former Hanseatic town - which until the 1980s was known as an industrial location typical for coking plants, steelworks and breweries - has transformed itself into a city of service firms and high-tech companies, a centre for tradefairs, exhibitions and congresses.
The city today is also shaped by the University of Dortmund with 24,000 students and the multicultural lifestyles of numerous nationalities. The range of leisure-time things to do is truly wide-ranging. Museums, concerts, parks, gardens, art exhibitions and a large variety of cultural activities for the young all go to show that Dortmund is a youthful and vibrant city. Dortmund is also known for the cross-generational love of its famous football team, Borussia Dortmund, and for the open-minded attitude of the people of the Ruhr.
Nevertheless, the city is not alone in being faced with social problems, integration difficulties, high unemployment and structural and environmental issues.
Experience with the Youth Programme
Over the course of the 1990s, the AG NRW organised a series of youth meetings with multiplicator effect - these usually and kindly supported by Youth for Europe and the Youth Action Programme. Today, the AG NRW is not too active in this field but, since 2003, it has committed to three project places within the EVS and, every year, it accepts four or five volunteers and dispatches a similar number.

Aktivitäten:
Das Auslandsinstitut arbeitet unter dem Dach der Auslandsgesellschaft. Es ist die Keimzelle, aus der der Verein in seiner heutigen Ausprägung hervorgegangen ist. Das Institut vermittelt Informatio-nen über fremde Kulturen, entwickelt und pflegt Kontakte in zahlreiche Länder.
Tragendes Element dieser Arbeit sind dreißig ehrenamtlich geführte bilaterale Länderkreise, die mit ihren Workshops und Diskussionsvorträgen, Vorträgen, Konzerten und Ausstellungen Begegnung ermöglichen und Wissen über das Leben in anderen Ländern Europas und der Welt vermitteln.
Hier engagieren sich viele MigrantInnen und BürgerInnen aus Dortmund und Umgebung. Für das Auslandsinstitut bedeutet die Aufnahme eines europäischen Freiwilligen eine weitere Öffnung und Bereicherung ihrer länderübergreifenden Arbeit. Anregungen und landesspezifische Erfahrungen des/der Freiwilligen werden aufgegriffen und in die Arbeit eingebracht.
Region und Umfeld:
Dortmund, im Herzen Westfalens und am Randes des Ruhrgebiets gelegen, bietet mit seinen 600.000 Einwohnern ein vielfältiges wirtschaftliches und kulturelles Leben. Die frühere Hansestadt, bis in die achziger Jahre überwiegend bekannt als Industriestandort mit Kokereien, Stahlwerken und Brauereien, hat sich in den vergangenen zehn Jahren zu einem Stadt zahlreicher Dienstleistungs- und Hightechfirmen und einem Zentrum von Messen und Kongressen gewandelt.
Die Stadt wird auch geprägt von der Dortmunder Universität mit 24.000 Studierenden und dem multikulturellen Leben zahlreicher Nationalitäten.
