Description:
This training course addresses the place and role of Islam in contemporary Europe. Through a programme based on non-formal education methods, the TC will explore the place of religion, culture and identity in today’s Europe, foster reflection on the contemporary and historical factors that influence the portrayal of Islam in European societies and its place in public debate. This TC aims to equip youth workers with relevant tools and methods to address the issue in youth work as well as to influence their attitudes towards Islam and Muslims. The main venue is Sheki, Azerbaijan. The project duration is six days. The project will involve 14 partner promoters from programme, EECA and SEE partner countries, with two youth workers from each promoter.
Objectives:
• To raise awareness of the basic beliefs, practices, history and culture of Islam, with a view to countering negative stereotypes and prejudices in youth work, including tackling Islamophobia
• To encourage an appreciative yet critical view of Islam, with a view to supporting participants to develop an understanding of a contemporary Islamic European identity
• To examine issues connected to Islam that relate to the understanding of Europe, European citizenship and European identity:
• To explore the role of Islam and Europe’s history
• Explore diversity within Islam and among Muslims, with a view to developing a more subtle and well informed understanding of the religion among participants
• To equip participants with tools and methods of addressing the above-mentioned topics in their work with young people
• To link the issue of cultural diversity and Europe’s religious heritage with European citizenship and European identity

Potential Partner Countries:
EU Countries plus EU, Turkey, Norway, Lichtenstein and Eastern European and Caucasus, South Eastern Europe
Conditions:
As the project seeks funding by the Youth in Action Programme accommodation and food will be provided by the organizers. Travel costs to the venue and back will be covered 70%. The visa costs for entering Azerbaijan will be covered 100%.
