This post is located in the Security Council Subsidiary Organs Branch in the Department of Political Affairs. The incumbent will report to the Chief of the Branch and the Coordinator of the Monitoring Team.


Responsibilities:

Under the general supervision of the Chief of the Security Council Subsidiary Organs Branch and the direction of the Coordinator of the Monitoring Team established pursuant to Security Council Resolution 1526 (2004), the incumbent will provide substantive support to the experts of the Monitoring Team. The responsibilities of the Monitoring Team are set out in annex I of resolution 1904 (2009). The responsibilities of the incumbent will include, inter alia, (a) Undertaking research on issues relating to the Monitoring Team’s mandate; (b) Assisting in the preparation of analytical papers on specific issues to be presented to the Committee or reflected in the Monitoring Team’s reports and communications; (c) Assisting the Monitoring Team in pursuing case studies supported with detailed sources of information; (d) Drafting specific portions of the reports mandated by the Security Council as well as other communications; (e) Facilitating, and participating in, the visits by experts to selected states: coordinating the necessary logistics and preparing background information and talking points for such travel and preparing informative draft reports upon return; (f) Monitoring relevant information from various sources, in particular that relates to individuals or entities already or potentially to be placed on the Al-Qaida and Taliban Sanctions Committee’s Consolidated List, and making necessary entries into the Monitoring Team’s database, with a view to improving the quality of the list and its use.

Education:

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in international law, political science, international relations or related fields. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.


Work Experience:

A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, conflict resolution or related area. Experience in counter-terrorism issues is desirable. Experience in Security Council sanctions issues is desirable. Experience working with national authorities and/or international organizations is desirable.


Languages:

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this post, fluency in English (both oral and written) is required. Knowledge of Arabic or French is desirable.
