Project 2: "Empowerment through Education" (for Turkish children)

The goal of this project is to empower children and young people by aiding them in improving their English language abilities and other skills that would benefit them in their future lives and careers. This project has proven successful with Iraqi refugee children (please see project 1) and AED would like to expand this to include Turkish children who could use the same linguistic support and who have fewer opportunities to attend English courses or to be taught by native (or fluent) English speakers. Requirements for volunteers wishing to participate in this project are that they must be fluent in English, not have a strong accent and have the ability and desire to teach children and young people. Members of the organization and other volunteers with experience in teaching would support the new volunteers with ideas and tried and proven methods of teaching a foreign language and other subjects that would be helpful to the children/young people they would be teaching. Depending on the talents of the volunteers the project could be expanded to include classes on topics such as music, dancing, theatre, art, etc. Project requires long-term volunteers, 6-12 months.

Project 3: "Coloring their World"

The goal of the project is to provide a higher standard environment for government hospitals, schools, and other similar institutions. Upgrading government institutions' physical appearance is a positive step for a better overall 'attitude and environment of wellness' in a sector that often does not have sufficient budgetary assets for this but where the need for a more uplifting environment is apparent. Project activities include brightening up public hospitals and other institutions for the underprivileged by painting colourful and child-friendly wall murals, thus creating a positive environment that cheers up and gives hope, especially to the children and parents who spend long periods of time recovering from surgery as well as life-threatening illnesses such as leukemia. Project activities include locating hospitals with children's wings and other institutions geared toward children, discussing the design and plans with the managing staff, fitting in desired themes with adequate pictures and colorful designs. Once this aspect is completed and agreed upon, an outline is first drawn and then colourfully painted in. Depending upon the size of the wall, one wall can take two days or longer to complete. The beneficiaries are mainly convalescing children who, due to operations or long term illnesses, spend extended time in hospitals, as well as the parents and extended families of the patients and the medical staff. Project requires long term EVS volunteers (6 to 12 months).

Project 4: "A New Look"

The goal of this project is to improve institutions for the underprivileged that need renovation. The type of renovation required would vary from painting, renovating bedrooms and bathrooms, renovating sports areas, carpentry to create needed items such as tables, shelves, etc., setting tiles, and many other forms of renovation. Volunteers needed for this project would be those who are talented along the lines of carpenter work, plumbing, painting, and other forms of renovation. Volunteers wishing to apply for this project should mention what previous experiences they have had along these lines, as well as specify if they would like to only be a participant in the project or assist in coordinating the renovations and repairs (if they feel qualified to do so). The volunteers would be provided with the materials needed to renovate the institutions (or the financial backing to buy the materials that they need) but should be able to carry out the project by themselves or with other volunteers involved in the same project, in communication with the host organization.

Project 5: "Clean-up My World"

The goal of this project is to beautify the parts of Istanbul/Turkey in need of uplift due to the trash and clutter that damage the environment and the view of touristic and historical areas. This would include beaches, forests and other areas in nature. The tasks of the volunteers would be to teamwork and find a strategy to clean out the trash and waste products as well as to find a solution together with the organization about how to maintain these areas once they have been cleaned. They would also participate in the dissemination of information regarding environmental awareness especially geared toward children and would prepare a strategy for educating the nearby population as to how to preserve these areas and care for their environment. This would either be a short term EVS project or would be combined with another one of AED's EVS projects.
