Summary:
One-week elementary Turkish language and Turkish culture program will be organized at Yasar University Izmir Turkey.The main purposes of the course are to teach learners to speak Turkish in daily use and to introduce to Turkish culture. Target group: Youth workers, Trainers, youth leaders.
For participants from: Youth in Action Programme Countries.
Group size: 13 participants
Details:
Firstly, participants will be given information on the Turkish Language, materials on the Turkish alphabet, pronunciation and some basic grammar rules. They will be informed about Izmir, as well as how to organize their travel effectively. A pre-course questionnaire will be sent to the participants to make the course more efficient, asking for information on the following;

- English language level
A message board will be created as a discussion site where participants and trainers will have the opportunity to get acquainted with each other and share ideas. Participants will introduce their institutions, experiences and also motivation why they want to join this course. They are expected to complete a form about their interests and expectations for the course. Finally, participants will be asked to prepare short presentations about their countries, cities and cultures, as well as presentations of their organizations. They will be told what to bring and prepare for the training. All of the above will be sent via post or e-mail.
Objectives:
Learners will learn functional Turkish that they can come across in their life during their stay in Turkey. The course aims to promote links between teachers, schools, and people who are involved in the adult education process in different countries of Europe. Moreover, to enhance the European dimension of learning and teaching, to refresh language skills, and to establish networks between participant teachers and institutions are among our goals. Furthermore, they will be introduced to Turkish culture. This course is for learners without prior knowledge. The major course objective is to teach learners to speak Turkish in daily use. The course includes Turkish customs.
At the end of the seminar, participants are expected:
• To be familiar with the Turkish language;
• To have developed language skills in Turkish (listening and speaking). More specifically, participants will have developed the beginner level vocabulary in Turkish, they will be able to respond to communication in basic circumstances, and they will know the basic Turkish grammar. They will have covered the material included in the Beginner level which corresponds to the levels A1 of the European Language Portfolio;
• To be familiar with many aspects of contemporary Turkish culture (art, history, society, nature);
• To have explored the contemporary Turkish life as they get in contact with local population;
• To be familiar with the city of Izmir, its history and with aspects of its inhabitants’ social life;
• To experience intercultural dialogue.
Methodology:
The course will be led by experienced tutors who aim to make use of up-to-date teaching techniques not only by implementing classroom based learning but also extracurricular activities to create a warm atmosphere in the classrooms for learners. The course is based on the principles of participatory adult education. The tools and methods used are based on the principles of non-formal education: exercises, games and group dynamics, in committees or in subgroups, and the participants are invited to produce the content of the training rather than passively absorb the information. The communicative method which brings out the communicative aspects of the language and eclectic method will be used. Moreover, the course follows the principles of modern didactics of living languages, which gives emphasis to culture. During the course active learning and exchange of ideas and information about other cultures are encouraged .The above mentioned methodology is implemented via a daily schedule which includes 5 hours of language instruction, and three hours of extra activities such as singing Turkish songs lesson, visits to Museums, city tours and presentations on Turkish culture.
