Methodology
Gestalt therapy & gestalt theatre

Gestalt therapy is a psychotherapeutic approach developed by Frederick S. Perls and his wife Laura Perls in the 1940’s and 1950’s. Gestalt became part of the humanistic approach to psychotherapy, and was ground breaking in shifting the focus from the analyst as observer to the inclusion of self by the therapist, expressed in a dialogic relationship between therapist and client. Gestalt Therapy, in its purest application, addresses what is happening in the moment in relationship between the therapist and client. The Gestalt approach brings into the client’s awareness, in the present, the more obvious discrepancy between the individual’s presentation or responses and their current life situation. Once we are fully present in the here and now, we are able to take responsibility for our responses and actions with more excitement, energy and courage to live life directly.
Gestalt Theatre: its methodology is the result of the synthesis between Theatre of the Experience and Gestalt therapy as a means for self-discovery, growth and the person’s holistic development. The value of this fusion is that, as well as all therapy is defined with a cure, art develops health. In particular Gestalt therapy and Theatre share the same precepts of the experience: working in the present, to be aware and take responsibility for your own experience so both are included and nourishing each other. Much of the therapeutic value of theatre is that everyone is his/her own tool, his/her instrument and his/her interpreter. Fiction requires exploring safely entering situations that otherwise the person would avoid, to express feelings that were contained, release emotions that had been penalized and integrate different aspects of ourselves that we used to give less or no space. This will be the transversal methodology for the retreat. Many of the contents will be covered through these two approaches.
Gestalt art therapy
Art therapy is a form of expressive therapy that uses the creative process of making art to improve a person’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being. The creative process involved in expressing one’s self artistically can help people to resolve issues as well as develop and manage their behaviors and feelings, reduce stress, and improve self-esteem and awareness. You don’t need to be talented or an artist to receive the benefits and there are professionals that can work with you to dive into the underlying messages communicated through your art, which will aid in the healing process. Art therapy can achieve different things for different people. It can be used for counseling by therapists, healing, treatment, rehabilitation, psychotherapy, and in the broad sense of the term, it can be used to massage one’s inner-self in a way that may provide the individual with a deeper understanding of him or herself. Art therapy proposes an accompaniment to the person in personal development in a context of maximum care and empathic listening. Art therapy restores communication with oneself and the environment. Through our creations we can re-experience conflicts in a safe environment and we can take the responsability and overcome them.
