Background of the project
Theatre of the Oppressed is a collective rehearsal for reality. The main idea of this methodology is to make people experience and understand how a change of an attitude, behaviour or thinking pattern can have a powerful significant effect on their life as well as lives of people around them.
Forum and Image
Theatre methods are highly adaptable to the needs of different communities, with a large capacity to cover all kind of the social issues: human rights problems, power abuse and oppression in different ways, lack of activism, discrimination, exclusion, poverty, marginalization, xenophobia, etc. and trough a creative approach provides a space for people to reflect, find solutions to these topics and transfer the solutions in their lives. Based on the experience of A.R.T. Fusion and KuKu Associations, active in youth field from more than 9 years, it is clear that Theatre of the Oppressed even if is a very efficient methodology for handling social problems is not enough known and applied. This project is an answer to the needs of various youth organizations that need new methods for improving the situation of their target groups. The main goal of the project is to increase level of empowerment and participation of young people as key elements for a social sustainable society in Europe.
More specific objectives are:
• To increase knowledge in Theatre of The Oppressed (with focus on Forum and Image Theatre) principal concepts and theory of practitioners in the field;
• To develop and improve skills in non-formal education in general, and in particular in Forum and Image Theatre methods for youth workers;
• To develop pro-active and specific attitudes among the partners NGO members and also among the beneficiaries of the partners related to Theatre of the Oppressed and Theatre for Change philosophy;
• To increase the sense of common responsibility for the future of their local communities as well as the whole European community;
• To empower the participants to act as Forum and Image Theatre multipliers in their own organization and regions.
Training course
During the training course participants will acquire new alternative methods for dealing with social problems/conflicts and oppression – the method can be used further on in their activities with their target groups and in non-formal education of their colleagues. The course is strongly based on experiential learning (learning by doing), with adequate time allocated for debriefing and reflection throughout the whole program.
Generally, the working methods will be rather non-formal and participative. The methods are chosen in a way to allow for a maximum of substantial learning effects, meet the needs of the group and encourage a high level of participation in a very unique way in the process of the training. It is very important to take the “real-life” cases and the experience of the participants and their organizations and to work with these. The participants will receive as well a detailed manual developed by the experts involved in the project which will be support material for the later transfer in their realities.
