Nowadays a high number of young people is affected by or at risk of social exclusion in different spheres of the society. Research has shown that the barriers which in certain contexts prevent young people from having an effective and participatory access to formal education (like social obstacles, economic obstacles, educational difficulties, disability etc.) also exist in the field of non-formal education. A more inclusive youth work is important because - by facilitating the gaining and the development of life-relevant knowledge and skills respectively – non-formal education actually possesses a high potential both to reduce the negative effects of social exclusion amongst young persons already affected and to decrease the risk of social exclusion of disadvantaged groups of young people. Indeed, in recent years many non-formal education organisations strived to make their youth work more inclusive – starting from the acquisition of participants to the actual conducting of their seminars/workshops/projects. Nonetheless, different problems/challenges can arise when trying to create an inclusive youth work setting as working with heterogeneous groups of young people requires from the youth workers involved specific knowledge, skills and competencies. For the work with a diverse group of young people youth workers not only need inclusive methods (newly developed, adapted or re-designed to suit the situation of each specific seminar/workshop/project) but also have to be sensitised about the fact that not every method suits each target group(s) and that reflection upon the spectrum of methods they already have is demanded. The seminar “Exclude exclusion - we do inclusion!” aims to develop participants' knowledge, skills and competencies on work with a diverse group of young people. The target group of the project is youth workers from EU and non-EU-countries who are striving to work or already work with young people from diverse backgrounds. A special focus of the seminar will be the work with groups consisting of young people with and without disabilities.
The objectives of the seminar are:
1) To involve the participating youth workers into understanding, discussing and confronting the exclusion/inclusion of a wide range of different (disadvantaged) groups of young people and the youth work with mixed groups (mixed groups include young people without and with fewer opportunities).
2) To give to the youth workers the space to share their best practices in working with groups consisting of young people from diverse backgrounds, with and without disabilities.
3) To raise the understanding of the youth workers regarding the specificity, problems and efficiency of work with a mixed group.
4) To develop skills of the youth workers for working with a mixed group like the ability to transform and to adapt existing non-formal methods based on the specificity of a certain mixed group.
5) To transform and to adapt existing non-formal methods based on the specificity of a mixed group.
6) To develop new methods of working with a mixed group.
7) To build capacity of non-governmental organisations and youth workers.
8) To find out how to promote active participation, personal development, creativity and entrepreneurship, employability, mobility and spirit of initiative and cooperation among young people which form a mixed group.
9) To inform the participants about opportunities to develop new projects under the Erasmus+ Programme, as well to support establishment of new partnerships, especially with Eastern Partnership countries.
