Description

Context

This contact making seminar’s starting point is the observation that when young people disagree with governments or political parties, they express their discontentment in different ways, taking many forms and degrees of participation. Either they reject established political parties by not voting at the regional, national or European elections or adopt a more extreme behavior by voting far-right or far-left parties. Note that nine far-right parties integrated the European Parliament at the last elections. Young people can also rise up in protest and disseminate political messages by using for example social media. The wave of demonstrations and violent protests that young people were engaged in Ukraine, prompted by their profound rejection of the political system, is a concrete example of what the outcome of young people’s disagreement could be.

Several times over the last 5 years, many European and global main squares have seen demonstrating thousands of people who came to raise their discontentment and concerns about the recent political or socio-economic changes. Indeed, some regions of the world, including the EECA region, have seen emerging internal and external political instability, inequality and a sense of indignation and injustice. By protesting apolitically against the established political system, citizens expressed their disarray. Among those citizens we find a large number of young people; most of them are well educated, polyglot, at the forefront of technologies but their socio-economic integration has never been so difficult.

In view of the recent political and social events in the EECA region, the SALTO-YOUTH EECA resource centre in collaboration with SALTO-YOUTH Participation would like to organize a contact-making seminar that aims to stimulate the reflection on the different channels of participation that young people use when they want to express their disagreement with a specific political, social or economic phenomenon…
