What is practice peace?

Practice Peace is a two-stage training course on discrimination, conflict management and peace with participants from Germany, Greece, Kosovo, Macedonia, Poland and Serbia. In the first part (Sep 2015), the participants take part in a simulation game. They immerse themselves in a scenario from the Northern Ireland Conflict and take the role of real-life figures. Together they acquire a deeper understanding of social, religious and political discrimination and develop strategies how to counter discrimination effectively. In the second part (Jan 2016), they develop a tool box with anti-discrimination methods that the participants implement in their respective home countries.
Why a simulation game?
A simulation game replicates a segment of reality. The participants take on a role and try to deal with a specific problem, interactively and through means of play. In this way, the method promotes:
• Contact, confidence-building and cooperation;
• Better understanding of conflict dynamics and actors;
• Willingness to compromise and problem resolution;
• Self-reflection, conflict-handling skills and personality development.
The experience provides a personal connection to conflict negotiation and makes simulation games, together with their themes and results, a lasting impression.
What are the goals of the training?
The goal of Practice Peace is to empower participants to effectively counter discrimination in their local contexts. More specifically, the participants shall:
• acquire a deeper understanding of discrimination in all its forms;
• develop methods for educational work;
• develop ideas for local projects in the field of anti-discrimination and conflict management.
Please note:
The training course consists of two activities, one training including a simulation game in Sep 2015 (in Krzyzowa, Poland), and another training including the development of a tool box for anti-discrimination work in Jan 2016 (in Skopje, Macedonia). Participants are expected to take part in BOTH activities. There will be no separate call for the second activity.
