Details:
Outdoor is more is a 6-day long international training involving 21 participants from 7 countries: Slovakia, Romania, Czech Republic, Hungary, Latvia, Poland and Netherlands. Following the line of outdoor education, we will provide training of hard and soft skills, with winter outdoor activities and methods of reflection in the center of our attention. During the training, participants will be provided with theoretical background on how to facilitate reflections after various activities. Afterwards, there will be several opportunities for each participant to train newly adopted methods. Organizers will provide several winter outdoor activities which can be used in youth work. This is aimed to inspire participants to incorporate these activities in their own youth work. Outdoor activities will also serve as a tool for training facilitation of reflections.
Aims of the training
By using outdoor acitivities, organizations can efficiently deal with new challenges in youth work. Supported by reflection after activities, young people can truly learn from outdoor activities.
Putting emphasis on learning the art of reflection, we would like to support youth workers in delivering excellent outdoor programs for their target groups. Another topic of our training course is inclusion of young people with different personal background to major society. We would like to inspire youth workers from different countries to use outdoor activities and different methods of reflection as a mean to support inclusion.
In other words, the goals of the training are:
• to learn new winter outdoor activities, which can be used for the work with youth and other groups;
• to learn different methods of reflection after the activities;
• to provide environment where each participant will have many opportunities to practice;
• to understand role of the outdoor and closing of outdoor activities in the field of inclusion.
What do we mean by reflection?
Using the term closing might be more appropriate in our training course. Closing is a way of finishing an activity provided in experiential learning.
Closing can be for example:
• feedback; i.e. observation (for example of behavior) followed by expressing subjective personal conclusion of an observer towards the observed person
• reflection; i.e. an active process of looking back at one’s own experience in order to understand better one’s own behavioral patterns, motivations or other factors influencing one’s decision making;
• open end; i.e. after an activity there is a break or another activity is directly started, without facilitated reflection on the previous activity.
There are many other ways of closing an activity, they differ in amount of people involved, time needed, specific skills of a trainer required, etc. As we said before, our goal is to introduce to participants different approches to closing and allow them sufficient space to practice them. As a tool for this as well as a goal on its own, we will explore different outdoor activities in winter Slovakia.
This training is not
Just to assure that you have all the needed information about the event, we want to emphasize, that this training is not a sport event. It is not aimed to practice skills in winter sports as skiing, climbing, ski-alpinism, free skiing, cross-country skiing etc. However, these sport activities can be used as means of transport, as a part of group games or within activities with specific learning goal. This training is not winter vacation. We will be of course pleased if you feel like this despite of the work we will do. It is seminar where you can learn, your active participation is expected, sharing of knowledge is welcomed and your will to practice closing of activities is needed.
