Intro & background

African Diaspora is more than migrant, refugees or poor people: whilst not going into the reasons for migrating, to fight back the general divisive mainstream media discourse of an “us versus them” discourse and of “a good versus bad migrant” discourse. To do so our message needs to reinforce the common humanity between young people with Diaspora background and “normal young people “or non-migrants by highlighting that:
• Many of us are migrants or have thought of migrating;
• Many of us are descendent or relation of migrants;
• Migration requires great amounts of courage as it is for many a dangerous enterprise;
• Most of us know migrants: work, employees, social spots and neighbourhoods;
• Migration is nothing new – it is something of all times and entire countries and economies have been built thanks to the contribution of Africa Diaspora.
During the year 2009 and 2010 and 2011 some African young leaders had some meetings in Ivory Coast, Cape Verde, Portugal and Spain during which trainings, seminars, and workshops were held to enhance cooperation of young people between Europe and Africa. They started working on the issue of how to empower young Africa-Europe cooperation with Europeans, immigrants, descendants of immigrants and people with African immigrant background to better represent their interests in European and African society. Taking always in consideration social responsibility, youth cooperation and how the African Diaspora is portrayed in the media, the idea arose in the context of previous meetings of youth leaders representatives of youth African organizations in Europe. The common needs of young people from the African Diaspora living in Europe were strongly addressed during ADYNE's General assembly in 2012. This Seminar will be a space to reflect on ways to meet the current lack of youth cooperation and media, in particular with regard to their representation in the existing media but also the alternative medium and others involved in broadcast the image of Youth African Diaspora. This seminar will be focus on media, inclusion and empowerment of young people with African background. This seminar aims to promote debates, sharing knowledge, experiences and good practices by exploring the social inclusion. It will be a unique opportunity for youth leaders, youth workers and youngsters with few opportunities to be equipped with the necessary tools for global outreach through media to ensure strong cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue, enhance ideological difference, demonstrating that within the “difference” lays the value of mutual learning and understanding as well as ways to express ourselves and engage with others. This Seminar will empower 24 youth leaders to show the image of young people from African Diaspora they want to transmit, because the representation spread daily by the media is often far from the reality of life of many young people. This project will not only involve the representatives of organizations that work with young people in Europe but also leaders of African organizations including ethnic minorities groups and young people with economical problem. The group will reach a total of 30 participants, including the organizers and trainers. This training will be use the methodology of non-formal education as insertion of interactive and dynamic learning process.
