“The Theory of Animation: re-imagining youth work through animation” training course will introduce animation as an educational tool that can be used by youth workers in their daily activities with young people. The training course will teach its participants the fundamentals of the animation process and how to create simple animations (e.g. optical paper toys, flipbooks, etc) that can be used when working with young people. Participants will also learn how to use animation as a powerful tool of digital communication by producing exciting info-graphics and short animated videos that require minimal experience and equipment (mobile phones, tablets, laptops, digital camera etc). “The Theory of Animation: re-imagining youth work through animation” will bring together 24 participants (aged 18+ years) from 6 European countries – Lithuania, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain and the UK. The training will take place in Bucharest, Romania between 07 – 16 October 2016 and is designed for participants who are directly involved with young people (youth workers, youth leaders, trainers, teachers, NGO volunteers, etc.). The main purpose of “The Theory of Animation: re-imagining youth work through animation” training course is to develop the animation competences of youth workers and young people. The attendees will have the opportunity to share their skills and experience, to explore animation as a powerful method of non-formal education that could be applied by youth workers in their daily lives. We will also have the opportunity to explore animation from the perspective of digital marketing and using it as an alternative to traditional videos and NGO promotion. The 24 lucky participants will be selected by the staff at our partner organisations across Europe.
Applicants should be youth leaders, youth workers, trainers, teachers, NGO volunteers or similar and:
• Have experience in the youth field and youth work;
• Be interested in social change, digital media, animation, video-making and photography;
• Show interest in the themes of the project; Have the potential and desire to develop their digital competences; Be motivated to participate in the project;
• Want to expand their knowledge in the field of animation.
Please note, we are not actively looking for participants with previous experience in animation. In fact this training course is aimed at people with little or no experience in this field, but who are still directly involved with people with fewer opportunities and youth (youth workers, youth leaders, trainers, teachers or NGO volunteers, etc.), who are interested in their professional development and willing to share their experiences, to improve their knowledge and their digital skills.
During the training course, participants will achieve the following objectives:
• Improve their knowledge of creating a story and transmitting a clear message through storytelling as a primary way of communication and understating;
• Work in international teams to complete creative tasks;
• Communicate efficiently, planning and timing through animation;
• Develop their digital competences;
• Learn about the history, importance and types of animation using practical experience of creating optical toys and through accessible tasks that can be completed with minimal equipment and experience;
• Develop, improve and practice their skills in animation, photography, filming, editing, sound editing and publishing;
• Interact with the local community by creating short animation projects for 6 subsidiaries of the Metropolitan Library of Bucharest;
• Understand how to use animation as an educational method and as a powerful tool of communication in different contexts of working with young people;
• Be more confident in their abilities to use animation when working with youngsters and by creating animated projects that promote their NGOs.
